We want our students to really understand and value the fact that they are the authors of their reading and writing lives. Student agency, engagement, and independence is important every year, but as we transition into the 2020-21 school year, these traits seem to emerge as essential pieces to a workshop classroom -- whether or not our instruction is in-person or digital. Before launching the first formal unit of study, teachers will create a mini-unit that serves as a mirror: both reflecting on the past while also looking forward. In this session, we will co-create a mini-unit that allows students to share pieces of themselves through reflective writing, practice the structures of a writing workshop, and gain familiarity with physical tools and digital platforms that will create a solid foundation for teachers and students. In addition to designing an outline for this unit, we’ll examine informal assessment techniques so that teachers better understand students’ strengths and areas of growth without the stress of formal assessments so early in the year.
