Often, the first unit of study within a writing curriculum centers on small moment stories and personal narrative. Within the classroom community, this unit has the potential to be transformative -- not just for the way your classroom “runs” for the remainder of the year but also for building relationships among students and adults. In this session, we will explore essential pieces of what makes narrative writing successful for students. Additionally, we will spend some time developing seed ideas for our own writing that will ultimately be used in the classroom. We’ll identify some obstacles (and brainstorm ways to overcome them!), consider ways to publish and celebrate, and create a plan for the first formal unit of study so that you feel prepared to start (and finish!) this first formal unit in a powerful way!
