Brendan Ozawa-de Silva, Ph.D.

Brendan Ozawa-de Silva is Associate Director for Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning (SEE Learning) at Emory University’s Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics. Prior to his current position, he served as Associate Professor of Psychology at Life University, where he helped set up the Center for Compassion, Integrity, and Secular Ethics. He received his doctoral degrees from Oxford University and Emory University and his research focuses on the cultivation of compassion and other prosocial emotions, the effects of contemplative practice, and the development of contemplative programs in educational and other contexts. He has worked to bring compassion training into elementary and secondary schools, to foster children in Georgia’s foster care program, to women in domestic violence situations, to peace workers in Northern Ireland, and to incarcerated persons in state correctional facilities in Georgia. He is a founding board member of the Association for Higher Education in Prison and Associate Editor for the Journal of Healthcare, Science, and the Humanities.
